Best class to play in WoW Forever

Which class to play in WoW Forever: the best picks for solo leveling, dungeons, and gold, what the six new race-class combos change, and whether the Skyborne are worth it.

The short answer

There is no single best class. There is a best class for what you want to do. WoW Forever keeps the nine Classic classes, so most of what players learned over two decades of Classic still applies: Hunters and Warlocks level fastest alone, healers and tanks find groups fastest, and Mages are hard to beat for gold.

What is new is who can play what. WoW Forever adds six new race-class combinations and a new race, the Skyborne. That opens up choices that were never possible in Classic, especially if you want a particular class on a particular faction.

Blizzard can still tune classes before and after launch, so treat this as a starting point rather than a final ranking.

Best class for solo leveling

Hunter is the classic pick. The pet tanks while you deal damage from range, you rarely need to stop and rest, and you can handle most quests alone. Warlock is close behind for the same reason: a pet, strong damage over time, and Life Tap and Drain Life to cut down on drinking.

Druid is the flexible choice. Cat form for damage, bear form when things go wrong, healing in between, and travel form from level 30 to get around faster before your first mount.

Paladin, Shaman, and Warrior are the slowest alone, mostly because of downtime between fights. All three are much stronger in a group, and Warriors in particular get a lot better once they have good gear. For a full route, see how to level 1-60 fast.

Best class for dungeons and groups

If you want to run dungeons, play a tank or healer. Damage dealers are always plentiful, so a Warrior who can tank, or a Priest, Druid, Paladin, or Shaman who can heal, will find a group far faster than anyone else.

That matters more than usual in WoW Forever, which adds nine new dungeons from level 13 to 60, each with blue drops from every boss. The new dungeons guide lists them all with level ranges.

Best class for gold

Mage is the traditional gold maker: it can pull and kill large groups of mobs at once, conjure its own food and water, and later sell portals. Hunter and Warlock are strong too, since both can farm alone with little downtime. Rogue can pick pockets and open lockboxes for extra income.

Whatever you play, gathering professions are the most reliable gold. You will want around 100 gold for your first mount at level 40. The gold farming guide covers where to farm.

The six new race-class combinations

Undead Paladin: the Horde finally gets a Paladin option, something Classic never offered. A strong pick if you love the Paladin playstyle but want to play Horde.

Dwarf Shaman: the mirror image, giving the Alliance a Shaman. Good news for Alliance groups that want totems.

Human Hunter and Gnome Priest: two popular classes on two Alliance races that could not play them before.

Orc Mage and Troll Warlock: two caster classes on Horde races that could not play them before.

These combos do not change how the classes play. What they change is which race abilities and which faction you get with each class. If you were holding back on a class because you did not like its race options, now is the time to look again.

Should you play a Skyborne?

The Skyborne are WoW Forever's new race, split between the two factions. Horde Windshaper Skyborne can be Druid, Hunter, Rogue, Shaman, or Warrior. Alliance High Order Skyborne can be Druid, Hunter, Mage, Rogue, or Warrior.

Their racial abilities are modest: a short glide when falling, a small 1% haste bonus, and a little extra damage against elementals, plus a faction bonus to run speed (Horde) or health and mana regeneration (Alliance). Choose them because you like the race and its story, not because they make a class much stronger.

Playing a Skyborne needs the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher, and they start in their own zone, Zephras Isle. The Skyborne guide covers them in depth, and the new zones guide shows where Zephras Isle fits.

Playing with a bot?

The class that is most fun to play yourself is not always the one that runs best on autopilot. Pets, self-healing, and low downtime matter a lot more when nobody is at the keyboard.
